Chobham still has the feel of an old Surrey village, with a proper high street, big gardens set back from the road and the Common right on the doorstep of half the properties here. Sandy soil drains quickly and doesn’t hold roots like clay so Scots pine and silver birch often have shallower roots near the Common. After a wet winter, those trees are more likely to fall in storms. That’s why we check for Tree Preservation Orders early. Most of Chobham, especially near the village centre and the Common, is in a conservation area and some trees are protected. A few things we check before work starts:

• The tree may be shallow-rooted because of the local soil
• Recent wet weather may have increased storm risk
• The tree may be subject to a Tree Preservation Order
• The property may sit inside the conservation area boundary

Not every local tree company is prepared for Chobham’s older, taller trees or the permissions that can come with working near the Common. Before you hire, check a few things:

• Local knowledge: Ask whether they know the difference between working on heathland adjacent trees and a standard suburban garden. Root structure and wind risk aren’t the same.
• Insurance and qualifications: Any tree surgeon should be able to show proof of insurance and relevant training without being asked twice.
• A proper quote, not a guess: A written quote should cover the full job, including waste removal, not just the cutting.
• TPO awareness: If your property is anywhere near the Common or the village centre, your tree surgeon should be checking protection status before, not after, agreeing to the work.
